For Sale San Juan 21

SINDBAD is for Sale... 1978 Mark 1 sail # 1479 Asking $3,400.oo

Sailed by Stephen and Marty Freeman. Winner of 2 East Coast working Sail titles. 1983 and 1993.... Boat has a fair degree of go fast stuff. Mid boom block, traveler, adj back stay, block track or side of coaming, very large vang, two winches, spinniker gear on deck, spinniker pole, two whisker poles. Two Rudders, one original kick up "heavy" and a solid one piece "much lighter" No aux motor.

We have NOT sailed the boat in almost 3 years. Other things have just taken the boats place.

Good main and jib, also very seldom used class 130 as well as a phrf 150. Spinaker, seldom used, like 5 times....with a big white dagger in the middle. Fleet captain galvanized trailer reasonably good shape with just replaced new axel and hubs. Wheels galvanized and good, tires OK but not new. Boat is in overall good shape. Keel is straight, and tacks are equal port and stb.

I sailed the boat in this just passed East Coast National, with my 90 year old Dad. WE had Not sailed in 2 1/2 years, and we held our own, often in the top few boats at windward mark, speed was good. But my sail trim was slow to figure out....too much rust in the head from no competition You all know how that is, plus I had to set and take down the whisker pole and drive the boat...Dad just pulled on the jib sheets, but we had a great final time.

The boat is toooo good to just sit on a trailer. Marty and I have a treasure trove of great memories using Sindbad, and so many wonderful people we have met over the many years. Grandbabies, and life have just moved into the boat slip and the time to sell is now here.

Thanks to all that have been a part of our saling lives. We are both doing great, and do go fishing often, or just sit on the shore and watch the ocean, and those occasional special walks down the beach.. Write us an Email if you like...

San Juan 21 (Schatzie) For Sale

It is with a heavy heart that I offer this gutsy little boat for sale. There are few Gulf Coast regattas where the mention of Schatzie's name won't elicit a response (not always good). She's not the fastest, or the prettiest, but she seems to always deliver when the odds are long against her. She has two-year-old standing rigging, solid deck, three fair to good sails (main, jib, spin), trailer with bearing buddies, good rubber and spare. Older but working Ray Marine VHF. Follow the link for pictures and a damn find story. Price $1900

San Juan 21 #407 For Sale

07 Nationals winner for sale, #407

This boat was Rob Anderson's. I bought it last fall and now have it for sale. Rather than write my own ad copy, I'll just provide Rob's.

=================================================================================

"I had put a note on the notice board at the NA's that #407 was for sale. Since that time I really have been ambivalent about selling it. Frankly I have so many hours and expense into it, I really figured I should race it some more. With the mention of it being for sale in the excellent write-up of the North Americans, and the subsequent emails I have received, I have given it a second thought. So it is that I figure that if somebody were seriously interested and showed up with the cash, I would reconsider.

So here is the scoop on #407. I just finished a complete rebuild of this boat. The boat has only been used for two regattas .... The High Sierra Regatta and the 2007 North Americans/ Western Nationals at Huntington Lake. The first regatta we raced in "all sails" and were victorious against a very tough group of Fresno's finest. For the NA's I sailed in the "working sails" division, where we also finished first (results). The boat is completely set up for both divisions (.... one caveat to that .... I hate genoas on these boats and never felt I needed one ... so I don't have one)

As for the restoration, before I started I made sure there was no problems with the balsa core on the deck. I filled every hole with epoxy. I then placed all the new harken fittings, redrilled holes .... then enlarged those and filled them with epoxy and redrilled. Down below I fitted a stiffening member between the hull and cockpit aft of the centerboard well. I also put in two stiffening stringers radiating out at 45 degrees. (I hate the "oil canning" effect in that area) I also put in an access port from the cockpit through the top of the centerboard case. I wanted to be able to affirmatively insure that the metal keel gasket was secure and properly in place.

From there I flipped the boat over, faired and painted the boat with Interlux Perfection over epoxy primer. The boat was then flipped back over and I painted the deck with Interlux Brightside over epoxy primer. (I spent many hours sanding the old non-skid off and fairing the deck before putting new non-skid on before over coating with the new paint.)

Once painting was complete, I put all the fittings back on. The boat has a radiused traveler, roller furling and center mounted control lines. Also I used a macro/micro double cleat block on the mainsheet ... along with 8 to 1 "cascading" outhaul. All fittings and lines were new prior to the North Americans.

Included is a 2005 Pineapple main and jib (Used in five regattas), along with a Banks spinnaker. As mentioned above, the boat is fully rigged to sail with spinnaker or working sails.

Also of note is the custom trailer. When the boat was upside down I made form fitting bunkers. The boat rests primarily on two bunkers running right along the keel opening. The bunkers were then fitted to stabilize the boat (two aft ...one forward). I also fitted two large storage boxes on the front of the trailer. There is also an aft jack setup that prevents the boat from tipping back and can also be used for changing tires. The tires are new ... and there is a matching spare.

This is a "turn-key" racing San Juan that just needs someone to point her in the right direction."

1985 with galvanized trailer, no motor. Bare cabin cushions available. Has new halyards. This boat is ready to sail, no need to purchase anything right away.

The San Juan 21 is a pleasure to sail for both novices and experienced racers. Due to its light weight (1500 lb or so), it accelerates briskly in puffs and will literally sail rings around most bigger boats in light to moderate winds

They are also easy to single-hand with the fractional rig's small jib and large main. ...in the St. Petersburg, FL area

FOR SALE 1978 San Juan Mark II

Boat and Trailer $1,600
Dallas, Texas

Lightly used by original owner who has “lost” his crew and is no longer able to sail this serviceable San Juan. It is available as a “complete package” including trailer and necessary sailing accessories (motor available at additional cost). It was last sailed in 2005 and has been dry-land docked since then. Buyer may have to replace exposed main halyard and trailer tires, but all other items have been dry stored. Minimum bottom fouling and some hull bubbles are evident on below-waterline gelcoat; foredeck is still solid but is showing some age appropriate gelcoat cracking.

This is a great bargain for someone interested in getting into sailing, especially in these times of high energy costs.

FOR SALE: San Juan 21 MK 1 for sale

San Juan 21 MK 1 for sale $1750 for general public $1500 to a member of the San Juan association.

I am selling my 1974 San Juan 21 MK1. It is on a trailer that is rusted but works. Comes with 2 mainsails, one with removable slugs to make singlehanding easier. Also has a jib and several genoas. Comes with a spinnaker, spinnaker pole, whisker pole. I removed the spinnaker pole halyard but the block is still in place.

The mast can be raised and lowered by one person. I just made a new stern mast crutch that makes it significantly easier to do. Forestay replaced last year.

7.5HP outboard that looks bad but runs well. Motor does well powering the boat against the strong currents and chop we get around here but is too large if you are a racer.

Comes with a winch handle, some extra stayset, a homemade lazy jack system lifejackets, kick up rudder and an anchor.

Boat is located in Charleston SC.

Hull # 517 built Feb. of 1973 offered for sale by original owners. $3000.00/OBO

Sad to see her go, but she has been sitting tarped and unused for a long time. The working sails are original with slightly newer genoa and spinaker. A 6 horse long shaft Johnson is included. FOR SALE: 1972 San Juan 21 Mark I Hull# 467

$1500
Boat,Trailer, 4 hp outboard. Four life vests, anchor and rode, kick up rudder (rebuilt), v berth cushions only, 2 fenders, whisker pole, spinnaker pole, boat hook, paddle, spinnaker, genoa, 2 suits of Dacron sails, one set well used, one set very good, stiff and never used by current owner. Everything is original including the winches (no handles), jib and genoa tracks. Two milk crates of various bits (shackles, line, old flares, etc). Hull is gold with dings and hazing appropriate to age. Cabin and cockpit gel coat are also worn. Cabin top has some water infiltration under jib tracks, but damage is not to the degree it won't support load of average person. Fleet Captain trailer is in fair and working condition, tongue replaced 2000, new tires 2000, used maybe a dozen times since replacement. Outboard is a 1973 Evinrude. It runs tolerably but is fussy to start and needs a new starter cord and gas tank. Last run summer of 2006. Boat was raced by first owner and is class legal. Current owner purchased bigger boat. FOR SALE: 1979 San Juan 21 MKII #2263

1979 San Juan Mk II with Trailer
"Little Spare Time"
Hull Number 2263

$1500

Located at Two River Yacht Basin, Chesapeake City, MD

Good Condition - Over past three years have replaced all the stays, sea hatch and hood, and rudder. Includes 55# electric trolling motor (gets me in and out of the marina or away from a moor very well, won't fight a headwind though), two batteries, main sail, jib, anchor, bumpers and lines. Soft foredeck, ok now, but will need repairs in a couple years. Interior needs sanding and painting. Trailer has only been used to store the boat for the past five years. Boat has been a lot of fun, but just don't have the time to use as much as I want.

For Sale: San Juan 21

San Juan 21 Sailboat $2,000 Firm

This is a 1971 San Juan 21 hull number 83 with gear and trailer. It represents a time capsule of this classic swing keel trailerable design. One of the first one hundred built it has been used sparingly and has most of its original equipment. The original sails are fully functional. The hull and decks are firm and in good shape. I bought the boat two years ago to sail the Chesapeake. I worked on it last summer and took it on a three day cruse and it performed wonderfully. I have sailed across the Atlantic twice and have owned several sailboats. This one is perfect for tailoring and weekend cursing. The only reason I am selling it is because I have now bought an Irwin 35 for more extensive sailing. If you Goggle "San Juan 21" you will get about 30,000 sites to check out this type of boat.

All gear is intact and serviceable. I have labeled all shrouds stays and halyards for easy rigging. The only two lines that are needed are the jib and main sheets. The interior has been upgraded to include: all new wiring, new battery, new electrical panel, alcohol stove, interior LED light, new battery and new paint in v-birth. It also has new running lights and a new Plastimo compass. I rebeded all deck hardware that showed signs of leaking and added a couple cleats. The pine bow blocks for the headstay and bow ring were replaced with teak blocks and all widows were replaced. I pulled the main keel bolt for inspection (looked fine) and rebedded it.

The following additional gear comes with the boat:

...All standing and running rigging (except jib & main sheets)
...Sails - Original Main and Jib in remarkable condition for the age
...Sail Bags
...Battens
...Full cabin cushions (Sleeps four)
...Rudder
...Sail Cover
...Custom Stainless steel Boom crutch that fits in mast step.
...Load-Right Trailer
...Retractable Motor Mount

This boat is in remarkable shape for its age. I think it must have been kept indoors or under a tarp most of its life. Make no mistake it is a 36 year old boat so it is not in showroom condition but it also doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Now the reality - the exterior sides have been painted and have some slight pealing - cosmetic-only, there have been a couple small fiberglass repairs on the hull and there are some very small chips and crazing hear and there. The bedding compound on the deck hardware needs trimming from where it oozed out. You will also need to supply the Coast Guard package to include life vests, flairs, whistle and fire extinguisher. The trailer has some rust but is road worthy. There have been small leaks in the deck which I think I have stopped but the balsa-core seems to be intact and the decks are firm.

From the San Juan 21s I have seen this is in better shape than any of them. The boat comes as-is but if you are looking for one of these classics, it is in way above average shape. I have a clear Virginia title for both the boat and the trailer. Please bear in mind that pictures always make a boat look a bit better than it is.

I also have a 5hp two-stroke Mercury long shaft outboard with external tank that I bought for her. It has been used only on the one weekend trip and then rinsed, winterized and stored. It does not come with the boat but I will sell it separately (subject to prior sale) for $950 if you want it.

SOLD!!!

For Sale: Aloha 8.2, aka, Aloha 27. For sale outright, or on a trade plus cash basis for a Sj 21

I recently bought this very rugged, Robert Perry designed 27 footer, built by the esteemed Ouyang Boat Works of Whitby, Ontario. It wasn't cheap: these boats have excellent resale value. (Check them out at http://www.alohaowners.com/). I then had the hull, keel and rudder professionally epoxied, VC17 applied, and all sanded race smooth. I also had the hull beautifully compounded to a next to new look. All told, this was a US$6,500 job. I also bought a used triple axle trailer, capable of carrying nearly three times the boat's 5,200 lb. weight. Unfortunately, the seller then removed all the racing sails. As he is in Texas and I'm in Calgary, it will be very difficult for me to get them. And so, instead, I'm selling the boat, with the intent of buying something equally race ready, but hopefully with good race sails.

I also have been thinking of buying a second San Juan, this one for my daughter and son-in-law. And so, if anyone selling their San Juan is looking to move up and would entertain a trade plus cash, perhaps we can discuss a deal.

SOLD!!!
1971 San Juan 21 Mark I For Sale

I wish to sell my swing-keel SJ21 Mark I Juanita, hull number 265 (an early one), located at Sandpoint, Idaho. I love the 21, but my wife wants me to get a bigger boat (heartbreaking, aint it?) I've owned this boat for 4 years, and have done quite a bit of work. New custom v-birth cushions are in excellent condition. She has a Danforth anchor and rode. She has no electrical system. The hull is very stiff and dry (gets water in the bottom when it rains, but stays dry when there hasn't been any rain), the decks are solid. She has an overkill amount of deck hardware and can be rigged for any conditions, for single handling or full-crew racing. She has 4 winches, 2 on the cabin top, two on the gunwales. She has a large magnetic compass and inclinometer on the forward cockpit bulkhead. She has a Harken mainsheet traveler. She has an adjustable backstay. All lines lead to the cockpit. All deck fittings recently rebedded, backing plates fabricated and installed for all. New swing-up type outboard mount installed in 2004 (motor not included-although I can make a well-educated recommendation). New bottom paint at the end of the 2006 season. New main and jib halyards, genoa sheet. New stainless steel keel retract cable. Previous owner installed a nice keel fairing which is in good shape. Trailer included. The trailer is of indeterminate pedigree, but has served me well. The trailer has been modified to make launching/retrieving easy. It includes a spare wheel/tire.

Includes 7 sails: Sobstad tri-radial 1.3 oz. nylon spinnaker, good condition. Scott 150% mylar tri-radial genoa, new in 2006 excellent condition (great in light air). Scott Dacron main, new in 2006, full cut for light air, excellent condition. Knighton dacron main cut flat for heavier air, older but still fast, fair condition. Knighton dacron 100% jib, older but fast, fair condition. North dacron main and jib, old but still suitable for cruising.

If you are looking for a cosmetically superior boat, this isnt the one. She's presentable - no need to be embarrassed to be seen in her--but I havent really focused on cosmetics. A previous owner lightened the boat by cutting away some of the quarter-birth benches, so she would need closed-cell foam installed or those panels closed in order to be unsinkable (not really a huge job). A lot of work has been done (by the previous owner) to shape the bottom, keel and rudder, and she climbs beautifully when you find her sailing groove. Although I am not a racer, this hull was very competitive in the hands of her pervious owner. She's very fast to windward, and as fast as any comparable rig on a run, and has been a lot of fun to sail. Because of what has and has not been done, she's probably much better suited to the racer than the cruiser, although I've had a lot of fun just daysailing.

All told, I've put about $4000 into improvements, including the new light-air sails but not including about 100 hours of labor. You can just sail her every day as is or keep fixing her up, depending on your budget and temperament.

Asking $4000. If you would like any further information, please call me at (208) 263-4447 evenings

HISTORY
35 Knot winds on lake erie, sailing tward sunset bay, things get rough so we decide to beach the san juan and wait out the storm. Well i guess the storm had a different plan because it got us pinned sideways against the beach, the crashing waves healed us over. normally it would be no big deal but all the stuff inside all fell to one side, just out of coincedence the debree hit the keel winch and let it drop! so as the boat righted it self and since the water was so shallow the keel had no were to go but back up. Right at that instintanious moment another wave hit the bow and pushed the boat back and snap. the keel went forward, the boat quickly filled with water and she was at the mursey of the storm. later analysis showed that there is a hole as wide as the keel about 6 inches forward. the keel cable snapped somewere, and if We would have had the air balast caps on it would have floated home!! other wise the boat had a soft deck, that we replaced with 3/4" ply wood and never sealed from underneeth to eliminate the ability to trap water. A recently fitted J-class racing mast, a fresh black paint job that had been scratched in the storm revealing a yellow gel coat in very small spots. LOTS of extra stuff for boats (radios, bumpers, Travelers, blocks) It has a old evinrude 7.5 twin, that had a nice swim but can easly be restored. Sails are in sailable condition no rips tares just stains. trailer needs tires

FOR SALE 1974 SJ21 MARK II

1974 SJ21 MARK II, Hull ID# CLK217071174
Price reduced to $800

This boat is a terrific project boat. She had a fair amount of core damage, and transom rot. All rot has been removed as well as the wooden compression post and half-width wooden bulkhead. Lower gudgeon, outboard mount, and deck hardware (except winches) were all removed to facilitate core removal and transom rot removal. I still have all hardware except OB mount. I've also purchased a replacement aluminum compression post with attached winch. Mast and boom (not shown) are in good shape.

More than anything she needs time and attention.

I'd planned to do the restoration work, but have run out of time/money.
