subject:Main, Jib, and Spin class
As I am relatively new to the class I would be interested in knowing what percentage of the San Juan fleets sail in one-design regattas with the genoa. Other than the North Americans in the all sail class last summer I have not seen a genoa used during Fleet 8 racing. I put mine up for the first time this Spring during a PHRF race that was eventually canceled due to light winds. I currently do not know the wind speed for the transition to the jib, and I understand there are some in the class that are very sucessful sailing only with the the genoa across a wide wind range. I know with practice I could be fluent sailing with the genoa and would deal with it as needed, but if it meant getting a larger percentage of participation sailing in the spinnaker class I would certainly be in favor of doing more regattas with the jib/spin combination and leaving the genoa on the dock. I do think the genoa might in some cases keep people from stepping up to the spinnaker class. Just my opi nion not really based on any facts.Dan Bornarth
