free marine charts

Hi all,

Thought I'd give a heads up to everyone. I just finished downloading a bunch of charts for the Pacific NW to my laptop. http://freemarinecharts.com is offering a 36 page tutorial for $4.99. This the best 5 bucks I've spent in a long time. Turns out that the NOAA offers every chart in the catalogue (1016 total) in electronic form for free. The trouble is, (for those of us who are electronically challenged), the process is somewhat convoluted.

This instruction takes one through the whole process step by step in a very clear format. In addition there are directions for downloading free charting software which is necessary to make sense of the charts. Once everything is set up on the computer, your GPS will plug into a USB port and give real time info on course, speed, and position. Additionally, there is no problem printing off charts or sections of charts if you dont't want to take your computer sailing.

I know this sounds like an infomercial, but I can assure you it's all on the level. I have no interest whatsoever in this venture. Basically the guy is charging 5 bucks for something you could do yourself for free if, (and its a very big if), you had the time, patience, and know how.

Cheers,

Dave
