# of slugs and spacing

Hey all:

I'm going to put slugs on my sail. How many and what's the spacing? And... correct spacing from headboard (if relevant) and correct spacing from tack (if relevant) and any other suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Carlos

Hope you're going to use the sew on type. I had a friend who makes canvas covers sew slugs on a recent main. I think he spaced them about 18" apart. Too close, too many, pain in the butt. I'd suggest farther apart, maybe 24". I sewed some on years ago; need to have the leather palm thimble, the right needle, etc.

Here's a couple of pertinent(?) posted remarks from some sailing webpages:

"If I had to do it all over again I think I'd try the sew-ons myself. You'll need a leather palm thingy and some stout sailmakers needles and I suppose some heavy twine (waxed whipping cord?)."

">Sailrite recommends spacing Slugs at 24-26" centers on the luff of the main>"

"The trick to not binding is to not have too much nor too little movement in the shackle. If the slug can move around a little it will probably be ok. You need to be able to turn the slug 90 deg in the shackle without effort for the sail to flake easily. Good Luck. Regards, ..."
