subject:More on slides
Stephen:Thanks for the ideas. I saw your ideas on slides on the Fleet 1 site, but I didn't read it comprehensively enough and missed the final note on spacing dimensions. That helps.
I spoke with a guy at Sailrite who suggested using the shackles which screw directly onto the sail - no grommets. He said that's what they use for Catalina 22s and have had great success. So tomorrow morning bright and early I'm on the phone, getting them shipped express, so when I get back to the boat (in a slip this year) I can put them on. Yippeee.
As for lee/weather helm - I noticed when I first started sailing the SJ21 that it did have a bit of lee helm, especially compared with my first boat, an O'Day Daysailer. But I must have figured out how to trim well enough because it's not something that I notice really. My boat is one that has the mast step pretty far back from the forestay tang, so the rig is more aft than some. Right now I have the mast raked a bit, so that the halyard hits a point about 8" on the boom behind the mast. I could go further, but it doesn't seem necessary. I was out today and played with this: While heading on a close reach I loosened my tiller tamer (I like a bit of stiff feel on the tiller) and let it go. I felt a very neutral tiller with a little bit of pull to weather. This feels right to me.
When I put slides on this will give me a bit more weather helm maybe.
Thanks,
Carlos
