Michael, my wife and I sail with our two kids, who are the same age as yours. We moved up from the O'Day DaySailer (17 ft), and found the SJ21 handled in a very similar fashion. We did have to get used to the occasional 15 degree heal, but with enough exposure we realized that not much will make this boat go further than that--short of wonton neglect or lapse of reason:).Our kids have been sailing in small boats since they were born (ok, shortly after), so they don't sweat the healing like my wife does.
One thing we found to be of great service is an easy jiffy reefing system that keeps the boat more comfortable in heavier air. You'll need a main with reefing points. I can go into that via email if you want, but there is other info on reefing on this site.
Heed the multiple warnings to keep your keel pin in!
Peter
