San Juan 21 for a family

The San Juan 21 is a day sailer/ overnight camper and a good one. It is afun boat to sail and is suited for lakes and protected bodies of water. It is not a family cruiser. It does not like big waves, although it will handle wind speeds to 35 knots , but I would not want to be out in those winds for more than an hour or two. If you are looking for a trailerable family cruiser, I suggest you take a look at the San Juan 23. It weighs 2900 pounds dry as opposed to the 21 at 1400 pounds. The 23 will take much larger waves and has a lot more room for a family. You get room and comfort in the 23 and sacrifice speed and responsive sailing that the 21 offers. They are both good boats but have different uses. Gene Adams
