spreader/shroud question

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have figured out to rely on old friend Pythagoras.

Actually measuring things would have been difficult: The boat's in a slip over an hour away, and it's a pain in the butt to drop the mast while at dock. So I reverted to good old tried and true methods.

Using the SJ21 drawings, and various other resources, I estimated the spreader height above the mast step and chainplate distance from the mast step. I then laid it out on my back deck and using small nails rigged ersatz shrouds using stiff twine, one at 29" from the mast and one at 25" from the mast. I figured that even if some dimensions and measurements were not totally accurate for this exercise it would be sufficient.

I figured that the shroud length difference if I cut the spreader down 4" would be 3/4" longer. Given that my turnbuckles are opened up quite a bit, and that there is room to tighten things up, I think that I have room to cut the spreaders and keep the same shrouds.
