subject:Spreader Length and Rig Tension
I was reading in some of the SJ tuning guides that its really important to have your spreaders cut down for racing. But after thinking about it I chose not to cut mine down for the simple reason of rig tension. In theory a boat with longer spreaders should need less rig tension to get sufficient support on the tip of the mast compared to boat with shorter spreaders. These boats already have enough trouble carrying sufficient rig tension that I decided not to make the problem worse by shortening the spreaders. And unless your racing with the genoa, shortened spreaders are not really necessary.
