subject:overdrive and towing
I turn off my overdrive because my Mazda manual recommends that I do when towing. I've heard that in other quarters, too. It increases gas consumption, but I'm trying to protect my tranny. That stinkin' Ford transmission went out at 52,000 miles on my 2002 Mazda MPV van, just past warranty. (I later found out that '02 was a bad, bad year for MPV transmissions.) It was before I bought my San Juan 21, so it wasn't due to the towing. The replacement came with a warranty so I'm trying to protect it.
I would imagine that if you have a vehicle with plenty of tow capacity then it wouldn't make so much of a difference if the OD was on or off. Check your manual and see what they suggest.
