sail slugs

I switched from bolt rope by putting in some grommets and connecting sail slugs.

I primarily did this so I could drop the main sail fast, the wind changes drastically here in Colorado so I feel a lot safer being able to drop the main quickly.

Of course if I just let it drop the slugs come out of the mast. I have a sail stopper I put right above where the mast opens up wider, but then the sail doesn't drop all the way down to the boom and if I wanted to reef I'd have to pass a couple of the slugs past the sail stopper to tie it down tight to the boom.

Is there something available that covers up where the mainsail feeds into the mast so that when you drop the main the slugs will slide past the opening all the way down to the boom ?

I could have sworn someone told me about what he called a "mast gate" that was used to cover the extra width of the mast opening to allow slugs to fall all the way down to the boom. I didn't pay much attention then because I was using a bolt rope and the sail won't come down at all if you don't pull the bolt rope out of the groove so closing the groove to prevent the boltrope from being removed wasn't of interest.

Thanks
Chris
