subject:Identifing Hull Number
Hi JeffMy first SJ 21 - Hull #32 did not have any numbers on the hull itself. I did have a number on the metal plate on the sliding companionway cover that the tab for the lock fits thru. It was stamped on. I also found the same number stamped on the bottom of the mast step - the part that is mounted to the boat. I had it off to rebed it and found it.
My second SJ21 - Hull #19 also has the number stamped on the metal plat on the sliding companionway cover. It is not on the bottom of the mast plate.
Neither of my SJ21s had the wide spot for a winch on the gunwales. I would agree that it is an early Mark I probably built in 1970. I believe hull number 32 was built in 1970.
Have you been to the SJ21 directory. The link is http://members.shaw.ca/sj1732/. You will notice that 32, 35 and 36 are accounted for. That should narrow the search a bit.
Hope it helps.
