subject:class rules
Apparently some of the members haven't read either the class rules (any version) or the Chief Measurer's postings of 11/4/09 or 1/17/10. There is no ambiguity about the ultimate authority in the rules. The TEXT of the rule is the controlling factor. Period. Full stop. This is not new. This has always been the case. Unfortunately a situation has arisen that will be discussed at the Executive Committee meeting next week.May I posit another scenario as an illustration? I broke my mast and lost all the parts. I look at the diagrams in the handbook and get the measurements for a new spar. After thinking about the cool new boats out there, I decide to get a tapered carbon fiber spar with internal halyards. I make sure my spreaders are the right length, the bands and blocks are in the right place. Next regatta, I'm told my mast isn't legal because the halyards have to be external and the mast has to be untapered aluminum. "But the diagrams didn't say anything about that!" Should I be allowed to race in class regattas with my new mast because I didn't read the relevant sections in the text of the rule book?
Anyone who wants to help with the diagrams, class communication, websites, etc, should contact the relevant class officer directly - not just thru a posting on this forum - I'm sure any and all help will be appreciated.
